There’s something undeniably special about a built-in bunk bed. We’ve all got beautiful, built-in bunk rooms pinned to our Pinterest boards. But a true built-in isn't always the right solution. Maybe you’re working with a beautiful existing space. Maybe you want the flexibility to change the room later. Or maybe you simply want the look of custom millwork without committing to construction timelines and cost.
The good news is that you can create that same elevated, built-in feeling with a freestanding, highly customizable bunk bed like ICON Bunks - and a few thoughtful design choices around it.
The foundation of the look is, of course, the bunk bed itself. And this is where customization can make a huge difference.
A customizable bunk gives you more opportunities to work with the aesthetic architecture you already have.
With ICON Bunk, the goal isn't simply to choose a beautiful bunk bed. It's to create a bunk that works beautifully for your specific room.
Consider the bed size, configuration, finish, ladder placement, storage, and other details that can help the bunk feel like it belongs exactly where you put it. ICON Bunks can connect two bunk beds with stairs in the middle and grow or shrink the stair width depending on your room size.
The result is a piece that feels considered from the beginning - which makes everything you add around it feel even more intentional.
1. Create a Backdrop With Wallpaper or Wood Cladding
One of the easiest ways to make a freestanding bunk feel integrated is to give it a beautiful backdrop.
Whether you choose wallpaper or wood cladding, treating the wall behind the bunk as part of the design helps visually anchor the bed and creates the feeling of a custom-built space.
Make a Statement With Wallpaper
Wallpaper is one of the simplest ways to transform the wall behind a bunk without any construction. For a sophisticated, built-in-inspired look, consider taking the wallpaper from floor to ceiling. The pattern helps define the bunk's space, creating the feeling of a cozy architectural nook.
The key is to choose a pattern that complements the bunk rather than competes with it. Think of the wallpaper as the backdrop to the furniture - not the star of the room.
Or Add Wood Cladding for Architectural Warmth
If you're looking for something with a little more or an architectural feel, wood cladding can create even more of a built-in effect.
Wood sheet paneling, tongue-and-groove, or vertical slats can give a freestanding bunk the visual weight of custom millwork. For a seamless look, consider cladding the entire wall behind the bunk and painting the wall treatment, trim, and surrounding elements in the same color. For a warmer, more natural aesthetic, let the wood finish speak for itself. Natural wood tones pair beautifully with simple bedding, soft textiles, and warm lighting - and can bring a cozy, elevated feel to a bunk room.
Whether you choose wallpaper or wood, the idea is the same: create a backdrop that makes the bunk feel like it belongs to the architecture of the room.

2. Add Lights and Charging Stations
Beautiful is important. But built-in bunk rooms are also functional. Lighting is one of the details that can make a bunk room feel truly custom.
If you have time during your building process, sconces in the wall beside each bunk are both beautiful and practical. Each sleeper gets their own reading light, and the fixtures add another layer of visual interest. When planning your wall, consider the location of outlets relative to each sleeping space. A thoughtfully designed bunk room should give each guest a convenient place to charge a device, or simply have access to power when needed.
We have detailed elevations that can help you place your lights and outlets on the wall so they work with your ICON Bunk.
And don't underestimate the importance of color temperature. Warm, soft light creates the cozy atmosphere that makes a bunk room feel inviting at bedtime.
A note about electrical work:
If you're adding hardwired sconces or new outlets, electrical work should be planned and installed according to local code and, where required, by a qualified electrician.
If you are adding bunks to an existing home and don’t want to hire an electrician, plug-in sconces or rechargeable sconces can deliver much of the same visual impact without opening up the walls. Many plug in sconces also feature USB charging ports.

3. Make It Feel Built-In With Art, Books & Little Treasures
Sometimes, it's the smallest details that make a bunk feel truly at home.
A stack of favorite books. A little framed piece of art. A photograph. A tiny lamp. A treasured object tucked onto a shelf.
These personal touches can transform a bunk from a beautiful piece of furniture into a space that feels designed, lived-in, and completely its own.
Think of each bunk as a little room within the room - and give it the same attention you would give any other space in your home.
Create a Little Gallery Wall
A bunk is the perfect place for small-scale art.
Instead of hanging one large piece, try creating a tiny collection of artwork around the sleeping space. A few small framed prints, a family photograph, or a favorite illustration can make the bunk feel much more personal.
You can coordinate the frames for a polished look or mix them for something more collected and playful.
Just remember that bunk beds are active spaces, so artwork and accessories should be placed securely and thoughtfully, following the bunk manufacturer's safety guidance.

4. Create a 2 Toned bunk room
We’ve all seen those pinterest pictures of the beautiful painted bunk room with accents of stained wood that gives the space a truly custom fel. You can have the same effect with an ICON Bunk by choosing your stairs to be a different color than the bunk itself. For our Lofted model, we also offer the ability to have the bottom bunks be a different color than the top bunks.

5. Replace the Nightstand With a Shelf
Traditional nightstands don't always work well beside bunk beds.
They're bulky, they take up valuable floor space, and they can make the room feel more like a collection of furniture pieces.
A slim shelf or built-in-style cubby can be a much better solution to accommodate both the top and bottom bunk guests.
Give each bunk its own little landing spot for a favorite book, water bottle, glasses, or a treasured stuffed animal.
Floating shelves can look beautiful, but recessed or framed cubbies create an even stronger built-in effect.
And because they're off the floor, you preserve that precious floor space underneath and around the bunk.

6. Make Every Inch Work With Integrated Storage
When you're designing a bunk room, every square inch matters. But practical storage doesn't have to come at the expense of beautiful design.
ICON Bunks offers thoughtful storage options that are integrated directly into the bunk, including staircases with built-in drawers and drawers underneath the bunk beds.
The result is storage that feels like part of the architecture of the bunk rather than something added afterward.
Turn the Stairs Into Storage
Why let the space beneath each step go unused?
ICON's staircase option incorporates drawers directly into the stairs, transforming the climb to the upper bunk into valuable, easily accessible storage.
It's an especially smart solution for rooms where space is at a premium. Instead of adding a separate dresser or cabinet, the staircase itself can hold pajamas, books, toys, bedding, or anything else that tends to accumulate in a child's room.
And because the drawers are integrated into the staircase, the overall look stays clean and cohesive.

7. Add Canopy Style Framing for a Built-In Look
One of the easiest ways to give a freestanding bunk the presence of a true built-in is to draw the eye upward. Most built-in bunk rooms go wall to wall and floor to ceiling.
ICON Bunk's optional canopy-style framing does exactly that.
Available on both the Classic and Lofted models, the canopy framing extends nearly to the ceiling, creating a strong architectural silhouette around the bunk. Instead of feeling like a piece of furniture placed against a wall, the bunk becomes a defined feature within the room.
It's a simple design detail with a big visual impact. Think of it as a frame for the room.
The nearly floor-to-ceiling framing creates the feeling of a custom-built bunk nook without requiring you to permanently build the bed into the wall.
It gives the bunk height and presence while creating a natural framework for the rest of your design.
This is where you can really have fun with the surrounding space.
Add wallpaper inside the framed area. Paint the wall in a contrasting color. Install sconces between the framing. Add shelves or small cubbies. Layer in artwork, books and bedding.
The canopy becomes the architectural foundation - and everything else can build from there.

8. Add Softness and Privacy with Curtains
A little fabric can completely change the feeling of a bunk.
Curtains around the lower bunk create a cozy hideaway and give children a sense of their own little retreat. WIth our canopy style framing, you can add curtains to the upper bunk as well.
For a sophisticated look, skip overly themed fabrics and choose something timeless - a soft linen, subtle stripe, gingham, or solid color.
It's a small addition, but it can make a bunk feel more like a cozy little room within the room. ICON Bunks are built with a 3/4 lip around the inside of the top bed deck for lower bunk curtains, and canopy style bunks allow curtains at the top bunk.
9. Create a “wall to wall” built-in bunk room look
With ICON Bunks semi-custom luxury bunks we can work with you to create a wall to wall look in your bunk room. While our bed size model dimensions can’t be changed, we do offer the ability to customize your stair width! Standard stair width is 22" but you can grow or shrink the width of the stair tower to help your bunk room look perfectly wall to wall. Please note: we highly suggest about 1” tolerance on either side of bunk for ease of assembly and install.

10. Add custom cabinetry around the bunks
If you really want to go above and beyond, add custom cabinetry next to your ICON Bunk room. The cost to combine ICON Bunks with some simple pieces is usually still considerably less than doing a full custom bunk room. We are happy to provide a control sample to your cabinet shop for matching and help with any dimensions that you’ll need.
Custom cabinets add the ability to do niches, bookshelves and more.

The Magic Is in the Details
A beautiful bunk room isn't created by one big design decision. It's created by a series of smaller ones that work together. Wallpaper, lighting, shelves and of course, the beautiful bunk bed itself. When all those are considered together, a freestanding bunk doesn't have to look like an afterthought. It can feel like you planned this bunk room from the beginning.
